★★★★★ 10/10

Phnom Penh, Cambodia

I booked a private tour. A woman got in at the second stop. I didn't book her but I didn't mind. Today everything was, and I can't stress this enough, completely wonderful.

Teddy's Notes

A woman from Belgium got in at the second stop and offered me half a biscuit. I felt this was the kindest thing that had ever happened, but wasn't hungry. The city was extraordinary. Every building. Every street. I told the driver Dara he had changed my life. I've got his number. We're friends now.

The Happy Gecko Hostel

★☆☆☆☆ 1/10

Phnom Penh, Cambodia

I booked a hotel. This is not a hotel. There are bunk beds with seven strangers. One of them is playing a guitar. He told me to call him Kristoffer, though I never asked. The next morning he offered me breakfast and I found this threatening.

Teddy's Notes

The following morning I couldn't move or eat. I have some questions about the herbal sweets. I'd like to speak to Archie specifically. He hasn't replied yet. He will.

I told reception that a free breakfast still doesn't address the guitar situation. They agreed. Kristoffer said 'sick' when I told him where I was from. I didn't know what this meant. I began a formal complaint and fell asleep before finishing it.

Teddy's Phnom Penh Verdict

The Walking Street was overwhelming and I made a purchasing decision I'm still processing. The tuk-tuk tour was, for reasons I can't fully account for, the best experience of my life. The hostel wasn't a hotel and I want that recorded. I gave the remaining sweets to two people in the room - not Kristoffer. An hour later they became extremely affectionate. One told me I was his best friend. I found this quite moving. Would I return? Yes, but only for the tuk-tuk tour.
