I didn't message Archie an invitation. I messaged him my itinerary. I'm still unclear how he interpreted this as the same thing. He was at the harbour before I arrived and was already speaking to someone. On the boat, he appointed himself unofficial tour guide. When I attempted to contribute he raised a paw without making eye contact. He later informed a honeymooning couple that Ha Long Bay is better on a larger boat and that they had chosen the wrong month to visit. They were gracious about it. Archie kept me awake until 2am. He spent most of this time describing a dog he once met in Swindon. I asked if this was relevant to Ha Long Bay. The bay itself was one of the most beautiful places I've ever seen. This isn't reflected in my score, which is a shame.

Archie announced he wanted to do “his own thing” and hired a motorcycle. I went to Train Street alone. I'd like to be clear that I preferred it this way.

The street is very narrow. Bars and restaurants line both sides of a working railway track, and when the train passes, everyone simply moves and then puts things back. I found this admirable. I had dinner at a table two feet from the line. It was the most peaceful meal of the trip. There were backpackers on the other side of the track. I didn't interact with them, and they didn't interact with me. This was the best outcome for all.

Archie returned from his motorcycle adventure in city traffic, and insisted we go to the rooftop. There was no view. There was only the sound of motorcycles and Archie. I booked a flight while he was speaking. He was mid-sentence. I left a note at reception asking them not to mention it to the other dog on the third floor. I don't know if they mentioned it, I was already airborne.

Teddy's Hanoi Verdict

Hanoi was the best destination of the trip and also, the worst. The best was Train Street - four uninterrupted snacks. The worst when Archie appeared at Ha Long Bay and spent most of our time there telling me about a dog he once met in Swindon. I booked a 4am flight from the rooftop, while he was still talking. He didn't notice. He was asleep by the time I left.
